How do I know what size biogas bag I need?

The correct bag size depends on three factors: (1) your daily gas production rate in m³/day, which depends on feedstock type and quantity; (2) desired gas storage duration in hours (typically 4–12 hours for cooking applications, 12–24 hours for power generation); and (3) your system operating pressure. A simple formula is: Bag Volume (m³) = Daily Gas (m³/day) × Storage Hours ÷ 24, plus a 10–20% safety margin. Is the biogas bag safe to use with hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in the gas?

Yes. Biogas from agricultural and food waste sources typically contains H₂S at concentrations ranging from a few hundred to several thousand ppm (parts per million). Our Red Mud PVC compound is formulated to resist degradation from H₂S at concentrations up to 5,000 ppm, which covers the vast majority of livestock farm and food waste biogas applications. For unusually high H₂S content (above 5,000 ppm, which may occur in some industrial waste digesters), contact us for a specialist H₂S-resistant liner specification. Note that for downstream equipment (engines, boilers, gas cookers), H₂S desulfurization of the biogas is recommended regardless of bag material.

Can the bag be installed outdoors in hot tropical climates?

Yes. Our standard Red Mud PVC bags are UV-stabilized for outdoor installation in full sun exposure, including tropical climates with high UV intensity and temperature extremes. The outer laminate is rated for 10–15 years of continuous outdoor service. For extremely hot climates (ambient above 45°C), we recommend selecting a bag with an additional white or reflective top coating to reduce thermal loading—this option is available on request at minimal additional cost.

How is the bag connected to the digester and gas outlet?

The bag is supplied with pre-fitted connection ports: a gas inlet pipe fitting (matched to your digester outlet pipe diameter, BSP or custom), a gas outlet valve (to connect to your gas distribution pipe or gas stove/engine), a pressure relief valve port for overpressure protection, and a condensate drain for removing water vapor that condenses inside the bag. We supply the fittings as part of the bag system—you connect them to your site pipework during installation. A detailed installation drawing and piping schematic is included with every order.

What maintenance does the biogas bag require?

Biogas bags require minimal maintenance compared to rigid gas holders. We recommend: (1) monthly visual inspection of the outer surface for UV degradation, surface cracking, or pinhole leaks (detected by soapy water brushed on the surface—bubbles indicate a leak); (2) quarterly inspection and cleaning of condensate drain to prevent water logging; (3) annual inspection of valve seals and fitting O-rings, replacing as needed; and (4) keeping the area around the bag free of sharp objects (stones, tools, vegetation with thorns). Do you supply the complete digester system or only the storage bag?

We specialize in manufacturing the Red Mud PVC gas storage bag component. We do not supply the concrete or HDPE digester tank itself; however, we can supply the complete membrane cover system for open-top digesters (which simultaneously forms the gas-tight cover and the gas storage volume in a single integrated membrane).
